Blogalalia: An Introduction

The compulsive, spontaneous, often incoherent act of writing online articles of varying degrees of quality, taste, and interest, read mostly by the author, their mother, and a small coterie of fans who are part of a small, well-defined and not yet saturated niche.

Etymology (fictional): From blog (“online vanity project”) + Greek lalia (“babbling”), literally “blog babbling.”

Blogalalia: An Introduction

I first logged on to the Internet over 30 years ago, and I still remember the sense of awe I felt when that expanding universe of information opened up in front of me. I was filled with evangelistic zeal, convinced this new technology would democratize knowledge and give everyone a platform.

Around that time, I landed a job at a small web start-up, which eventually led to a modestly successful career in web development and related technology. Over the years, I came to do almost everything online, but one thing I never managed was setting up my own soapbox. I probably overthought it.

As the decades rolled by, I watched that hopeful, innocent young Internet grow into the annoying, aggravating, even grotesque — but still somehow wonderful — mess that it is today. And now, I’m finally ready to take the plunge and start a blog.

I’ve found my voice, refined my perspective, and — most importantly — picked out a WordPress theme. From here, I’ll be posting links, wry observations, essays, jokes, and, of course, cat pics.
